The Origin of Hakka

The origin of the Hakka people has long been debated, as there is no place named “Hakka City” or “Hakka Province” in China. Yet Hakka communities are found across Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi. In the Qing Dynasty, scholar Xu Xu first proposed that Hakka people descended from Han Chinese who migrated south from the Central Plains during the Song Dynasty. This theory was later confirmed by Professor Lo Hsiang-lin, establishing that Hakka are a branch of the Han ethnic group, shaped by five major migrations. Known for their mobility and adaptability, Hakka people often settled in remote, less fertile areas, coexisting peacefully with local populations and avoiding territorial disputes. The term “Hakka” became formalized during the Song era, and although they lacked a fixed homeland, they established roots in places like Guangdong and Fujian. When faced with hardship or unrest, Hakka communities would migrate again—relocation became second nature. During the great wave of Chinese migration to Southeast Asia, Hakka people were often among the first to venture abroad, demonstrating resilience and a pioneering spirit.
